The Role

Specialty Coatings (SC) at the i2M Center for Advanced Material Science in Bedford, MA is looking for highly motivated, talented individuals for the position of Principal Scientist in the Innovation Group.


In this role you will

1. New materials/coatings development
Develop plans and manages the activities for development of new coatings and materials in areas related to existing and new PVD, PECVD, ALD and other advanced coatings development efforts, in alignment with roadmap for technology and product development. Through investigation or experimentation, examines, evaluates, and tests discoveries. Proves, applies and interprets scientific or engineering laws and theories. This includes planning, development, and implementation of experimentation for current and future product applications. Communicates plans for development and results internal and external to the organization. Coordinates internal communications with Applications Development, Engineering, Sales, Manufacturing and Management via plans, team meetings, and other written/oral communications.


2. Materials expertise
Leads the understanding of fundamental materials characteristics and attributes for existing and new materials/coatings systems. Provides key technical support for presentations and resolution of complex customer problems. Assures product line IP ownership. Communicates plans and results to all relevant departments and participates in customer based product knowledge sessions.


3. NPI Planning
Develops and implements development plans that position our development plan to help achieve corporate goals. The plans and execution should assure timeliness, efficiency and commercial viability.


4. Roadmap Development
Work closely with Innovation manager, product manager and external customers to assist in the development of technology and product roadmaps. Understands and validates product and customer requirements for future products by conducting research, literature searches and by ongoing visits to customers.


5. Lean Sigma
Focuses on key development processes to ensure that they are robust, repeatable and reliable using Six Sigma principles.


6. Overall Support and Quality Focus

Demonstrates willingness to complete miscellaneous tasks as assigned in order to support the overall organization. Participates in Entegris' continuous quality improvement process, health and safety requirements and dedication to customer satisfaction.


May supervise technicians and entry level technical staff. The candidate maybe expected to support materials characterization, sample testing, data analysis and reporting as well as the upkeep of the characterization equipment.

Traits we believe make a strong candidate

Expert knowledge in materials characterization methodologies, such as SEM, EDAX, modulus and nano-hardness measurements, XRD, optical thin film thickness measurement, FTIR, TGA analysis, thin film stress measurments, etc.
In-depth knowledge of thin film deposition trechniques such as PECVD PVD, ALD, etc.


MS/Ph. D Degree in Materials Engineering or highly related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Generally 3+ years experience in new materials/product development, vacuum coatings or related field.
Preferred requirements: Knowledge of the microelectronics industry and knowledge of thin film processes (PVD/PECVD), tooling and equipment.
